TAKE ACTION
INVITE CFJ TO SPEAK AT...
Educational presentations about the Japanese
Latin American internment and redress experience are a top priority
for CFJ and JPOHP. These presentations help to educate the public, promote
teaching of information in classrooms, recruit volunteers, and encourage
further research.
We need your help to urge educational institutions
and community-based organizations to invite CFJ/JPOHP speakers. Within
educational institutions, we are looking for joint sponsorship by
various departments such as Asian American Studies, Ethnic Studies,
Latin American Studies, East Asian studies, Political Science, History,
Sociology, law schools, etc. We are also looking for sponsorship
from diverse community-based organizations, such as churches, civic
groups, legal associations, civil and human rights organizations,
immigrant rights groups, Japanese American organizations, as well
as German/ Italian/ Jewish/ other Asian/ Latino community groups
(recognizing their relation to issues from WWII).
- A variety of topics can be covered in the presentations, depending
on the interests of the audience:
- Historical background of the JLA deportation and internment
experience (highlighting family oral histories) and its relationship
to the JA wartime experience
- How US policy and actions violated the constitutional and human
rights of citizens and permanent residents of persons of Japanese,
German, Italian and Jewish ancestry on 2 continents (US, Caribbean,
Latin America)
- The significance of the JA and JLA experience in light of other
redress efforts from the WWII period (e.g. "comfort women",
victims of massacres and medical experimentation, forced labor)
- Insights from the JA and JLA redress struggle, current update
on the JLA situation (including the lawsuit), and relation to
other civil and human rights concerns.
